Further to the “self-riffing” section, the advice you sometimes hear to avoid repeating words in paragraphs is terrible – it takes you down a path towards over-writing. Repetition doesn’t have to be done as knowingly as in the example; if it helps connect sentences or adjacent paragraphs together it can be a thoroughly good thing, nothing to be ashamed about.
